DAILY SKETCH- TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15TH, 2011

It has some really unfortunate racist connotations but it is a great design.  The original print is attached.

left drawing 1

This diptych was 8′ high and 24′ across.  It was comprised of several sheets of 4′x8′ primed stonehenge paper, acrylic paint and oil sticks.  It took me about two weeks of work.  I tried to come up with all kinds of visual references to Jungian ideas of the collective unconscious colliding with the conscious world.  It was pretty grotesque [...]

Skull drawing 1

Ink and charcoal on some type of japanese paper.  This is one in a series of three ink drawings I did in school.  I was doing a lot of lithography and learning print making at the time.  I was also looking at a lot of really dark illustrations influenced by dantes inferno.

the domestic male...the first flyer

This was the original show flyer I designed for the show at Loose Canon Gallery.  Not great but it did the trick.  It was taken from an actual piece in the show. acrylic on partial wooden door section. Manipulated image. This was the actual piece in the show. As you can see the “gunner” became [...]

Mad About Colour... "scott tissue"

This piece was my favourite piece of the show; “the domestic male”.  Not for any secret paternalistic desire, i just like the way it turned out… acrylic on partial wooden door section. Manipulated image. original ad image

page 15..."the collector"

This series of panels set some closure to the story (open ended of course).  The composition for the last panel in the sequence was taken from photography of a guy who spent a lot of time spelunking in sewer systems, and photographing himself in the context of his urban exploration.  The members described the exploration [...]

The picture of the Galianno family is actually taken from the godfather movie, a closeup reveals that Frankie Galianno is actually Marlon Brando in the original film photograph. A small nod to Copala. Influences include Year One, Miller and Mazzuchelli.

featured page 13 "the collector"

Not much to say about this sequence of panels. I did quite a bit of grassroots research on the craft of telling a story through the medium of comic books. Scott McLoud was a huge help breaking down how panels function and the relationship of images when they are placed in particular sequences. I also [...]

I can’t draw women. So naturally this was a pretty big challenge for me.  She looks kinda like a dude so I guess it didn’t totally work out for me.  I was truly making some direct graphic references to Frank Miller’s Sin City.  I had to get a special printer to enlarge these drawings when [...]

page 10..."the collector"

This panel sequence illustrates the infamous Lister Block building located on James St. North, Hamilton, Ontario.  This building has a bizarre history of tenants and owners but now it sits abandoned and plays host to crack addicts and squatters.

page 4..."the collector"

This was my little nod to the Hamilton Spectator for the amazing permanent historical archives they fund at the Hamilton Public Library.  I spent a couple of days in that area of the library when I was originally doing the research for this work.  Anything from organized crime, prostitution, murders, drugs, and the biker culture [...]

cover..."the collector"

This drawing originally had a dual purpose; the cover of the “issue”, and also the main image to promote the show in the gallery window. This work was heavily influenced by artist Jack Kirby, well regarded for his rough angled mastery of depicting the physiology of some of the world’s most famous super heros. I [...]
