This series of panels set some closure to the story (open ended of course). The composition for the last panel in the sequence was taken from photography of a guy who spent a lot of time spelunking in sewer systems, and photographing himself in the context of his urban exploration. The members described the exploration as a journey into the heart of the true character of the city explored. I became so fascinated with this “underground” movement that I ventured to several online sites and blogs and discovered some really beautiful imagery of underground locations in various metropolitan cities. I really wanted the city of Hamilton to be a character in the story without overtly indicating as much. Like Batman, Sin City, the Spirit, or other crime noir tales, the city had to be as, if not more, complex than the characters in my story. This type of adventuring ended up really influencing the main protagonist character in my story, and eventually I adopted this type of exploration as his main mode of transportation around Hamilton. Silhouettes naturally came from back lit characters like many seen in the images on the net in those tunnels, or in pretty much any good noir film. Sequence definitely has some Frank Miller influence, as well as David Mazzucchelli. Historical allusions to the assassination of the famous Johnny “Pops” Papalia, a Hamilton crime boss who was shot in the head.
